Tiger iron from the Pilbara region of Western Australia is a striking metamorphic rock composed of alternating layers of golden tiger’s eye, silver-grey hematite, and deep red jasper.

These minerals are arranged in rhythmic banding, a result of ancient sedimentary layering that was later transformed by intense heat and pressure. Its formation began over 3 billion years ago, during a period of early Earth’s evolution when iron and silica accumulated in ancient seas.

Over time, tectonic activity folded and compressed these layers, creating the distinctive patterns seen today. Tiger iron not only showcases the dynamic forces that shaped our planet’s crust, but also serves as a tangible record of Earth’s early geological history and atmospheric development.
