Colour is a huge part of my life. Where do I start? As a child I loved to colour and always longed for a set of Derwent colouring pencils. My very first pay packet I bought myself a set of 36 pencils and I’ve never looked back. These days I continue my passion as a mindful practice. My mind is quite busy so being able to lose myself in an activity that relaxes my mind has been enormously helpful. A preparation if you like, to a deeper meditation.
For me it is a kind of childlike ritual. Get lost in the world of colour until I find myself using one colour in particular. I then use that colour to connect to a chakra and meditate on that. Easier to do when you have already made that instinctive connection to colour.
It doesn't matter what colours you use when colouring in…it is meant to be fun. You may choose shades of one colour or every colour available. Does it matter if your pig is pink, green or purple? No because this is for your eyes only. Relax, have fun and allow yourself time to do something mindful.
Give it a try and see how it works for you
* Sit quietly for a moment and take time to slow your breaths, taking a few slow and deep breaths through your nose.
* Choose a colouring page or get out some paper to draw/paint/create with and start to play.
* Notice the colour around you. What are the shades that you are drawn to? Note how these colours make you feel. Where do you feel it in your body?
* Continue to colour, draw, create - letting your mind relax as you intiuitvely create and play.
