Cacao is part of a centuries old ritual originating in Mayan and Aztec traditions in Central and South America. Cacao was used for medicinal, spiritual and ceremonial purposes for awakening and inner guidance. The word “cacao” comes from the Mayan words “Ka’kau” meaning “heart blood,” and “Chokola’j” meaning “to drink together.” It is often used in both group settings as well as solo daily rituals for people to deepen their connection to Self and gain clarity while gently opening your heart space.
Ceremonial cacao is the rawest form of chocolate and is the seed from which chocolate comes from. While chocolate or cocoa is made from roasted cacao beans and highly processed, ceremonial cacao is the raw unprocessed/minimally processed product made from high quality beans. Ceremonial cacao refers back to the ancient Mayan tradition of cacao ceremonies, connecting the people to the gods, the land and themselves. Although ceremonial cacao is the preferred product for current ceremonies and rituals, it is important to note that some companies produce ceremonial grade cacao but do not name it as such. Local brand Living Koko has chosen to omit the word ceremonial from its high grade cacao offerings in order to respect and honour the native cultures and ancestors that it traditionally belongs to while also honouring the Samoan origins and traditions of its cacao beans.
There are many great local cacao products available and it is important to us to support those that value sustainable farming practices and support indigenous ways of being and community. Understanding who you are buying from and their values is an important part of this ritual journey.
Cacao is a gentle stimulant packed full of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Unlike Caffeine which stimulates the nervous system and can often leave you feeling jittery, Cacao’s active ingredient Theobromine stimulates the cardiovascular system in a gently uplifting way and is beneficial to the heart, increasing blood flow in the body.
Cacao brings a lifted feeling of openness and oneness by increasing the production of serotonin, dopamine, anandamine (the bliss molecule) and Phenylethylamine (the love molecule). It’s truly a food that brings love and happiness!
Cacao is a powerful way to reconnect and open your heart space either through a group setting or through a daily self care practice. A daily ritual is an ideal way to find time to bring your awareness inward, allowing yourself to set an intention and open yourself to receiving love. By opening your heart you open yourself to all that life can teach you.
