We live in a time and place where we have access to everything we could possibly want all at the touch of a screen. We are more connected than ever but in doing so we have become disconnected with the Earth and partly, ourselves.
The Earth is like a large battery, it contains an electrical charge present in the ground. Everything including ourselves is connected to it through our own electrical charge and it is the Earth that grounds us through the exchange of electrons.
Regular bodily contact to the Earth grounds us both physically through the Earth’s natural charge and spiritually through a sense of mindfulness. Being grounded can help us to feel balanced, present, centered, calm and less stressed. Research has shown that by simply spending time touching the Earth with bare skin we are stabilised on a deep physiological level, reducing stress levels, improving circulation, improving sleep and an overall feeling of wellbeing.
Grounding or Earthing is the act of connecting our physical bodies to the Earth’s subtle electrical charge. By simply walking barefoot we are able to feel more present in our bodies and connect with the Earth and our surroundings on a deeper level.
The simplest way to ground yourself is to walk around outside barefoot directly on the earth. 20-30 mins is ideal to reconnect with yourself and become more present but even just 5 mins to take a calm and mindful moment is enough to help reset and reconnect with yourself.

* Walk outside barefoot - on some soil, sand, grass or stone
* Stand quietly for a moment and take time to move your feet into the ground, taking note of your body and how it feels.
* Close your eyes and tune into your senses; feel the air, notice the smells and the sounds you can hear.
* Take a deep breath through your nose feeling the air fill your lungs and stomach. As you exhale, relax your shoulders and feel the tension drop away. Inhale once more feeling your lungs expand and as you exhale relax more of your body feeling any stress or tension melt away, into the earth below your feet.
