Ammonites are ocean dwelling molluscs - cephalopods that lived during the periods of Earth history known at the Jurassic and Cretaceous. Together, these represent a time interval of about 140 million years.

The Jurassic Period began about 201 million years ago, and the Cretaceous ended about 66 million years ago. The Ammonites became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period, at roughly the same time as the dinosaurs disappeared.

Their chambered shell used for buoyancy and it's speculated that they had tentacles similar to that of a squid.

These creatures have been preserved as fossils in various locations around the world and have been found in sizes from 5mm to over 1m in size. 

Their shells may display iridescence (Ammolite), dendrites and chambers can be filled with Calcite, Pyrite and Quartz.

Although crystals have survived hundreds of thousands to millions of years (wow) in our earth they are still delicate and must be treated with TLC.
