SCIENCE
Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite, which is a member of the epidote group and owes its unique colour to trace elements of vanadium. Tanzanite‘s colour can vary from a vivid blue to lavender purple but it’s this stone‘s pleochroism that sets it apart from other similarly coloured gems.
Pleochroism refers to a crystal‘s ability to display different colours depending on the crystal axis it is viewed from. This optical phenomenon results in ’differential selective absorption’ (where wavelengths of white light are absorbed differently due to a crystal’s internal chemical structure). Tanzanite is an orthorhombic crystal and displays trichroism, meaning it displays three different colours from three different crystal axis.

Although crystals have survived hundreds of thousands to millions of years (wow) in our earth they are still delicate and must be treated with TLC.
Tanzanite is a brittle stone so must be stored or carried carefully. Do not leave exposed to hard UV rays.

Ethical mining/sourcing refers to the conditions in which a crystal is unearthed and the people and/or businesses that do it. Whilst a mineral may be sourced ethically from the earth, many stones are sent to factories in other countries for cutting and polishing into spheres and generators.
The label of ethics also applies to the selling and consumer purchasing.
Crystals must be correctly identified, certified as natural with any treatments disclosed. Too often crystals are lab grown or treated in a lab and sold as natural. This is incredibly important to us (and our in-house gemmologist) so each piece is tested and certified and accompanied by and authenticity card.
