Carnelian is an orange-red variety of cryptocrystalline quartz (chalcedony).


Colour: Orange, deep red to brownish-red, often banded with white.

Common geological occurrences: India, Australia, China, USA.

Crystallography: Forming in veins and cavities as a secondary mineral carnelian may also present a botryoidal habit. Typically banded due to the varying amounts of trace elements during formation defining the concentration of colour. Colour cause by Iron oxides.

Crystal care: Whilst carnelian isn't a 'soft' stone it is still prone to scratching and surface dulling over time if not handled with care.
