GEMMOLOGICAL QUALITIES
The name apophyllite refers to a specific group of phyllosilicate minerals of similar chemical makeup and they vary in appearance and chemical composition.
Colour: Colourless, white, green, pink, yellow and can be transparent to translucent.
Geological occurrences: India, USA and Brazil.
Crystallography: Apophyllite belongs to the tetgragonal crystal system. Crystals can be tabular or prismatic occasionally showing a pseudo-cubic form. Crystals display perfect basal cleavage (due to a weakness in the atomic structure) and often show incipient cleavage planes, which appear as parallel ‘cracks’ through the stone.
Observations: Apophyllite crystals may be singular or clustered and often in combination with other minerals such as stilbite, heulandite, quartz, calcite, gyrolite, prehnite, scolecite, natrolite and zeolites.
Crystal care: Apophyllite is a soft and brittle stone, cleaving and scratching easily so it must always be handled with care. If carrying small apophyllite crystals with you, always keep protected in a padded pouch.
MOH's Hardness 4.5 - 5
