Sphene is the traditional gemstone name for the mineral titanite, a calcium titanium silicate with the formula CaTiSiO₅. It crystallises in the monoclinic system and is prized by collectors and gem lovers for its remarkable optical performance. Transparent sphene is especially known for its very high dispersion, meaning it separates white light into spectral colours with exceptional intensity, often producing a fiery display that can exceed diamond. It is also typically strongly pleochroic, so different body colours may be seen from different viewing angles. While spectacular, sphene is also relatively soft at Mohs 5–5.5 and can show good cleavage, so it requires more care in jewellery than harder gemstones.
