SCIENCE + INFO

Once upon a time, some 28 million years ago, a gigantic extraterrestrial body collided with earth at great velocity and landed in the desert in Libya. The heat from the impact melted the sandstone onto which it fell and so the Libyan Desert Glass was created... or so the story goes. Libyan Desert Glass has generated intense interest in scientific communities due to the uncertainty surrounding its origins and has sparked many evolving theories.

Located in the great sand sea on the Egyptian Libyan border, the strewn field spans 128 kilometres north to south and 48 kilometres east to west, in terrain so inaccessible and inhospitable it's remarkable to have been discovered at all. The mysterious, vitreous substance overlies the bedrock of the Nubian Sandstone deposited during the Early Cretaceous epoch some 100 million years ago. Known as the stone for leadership and task completion the glass was used for tools by Pleistocene man (11 thousand to 2 million years ago) and may have been discovered in modern times as early as 1846. However, it wasn't until 1934 that modern science had a closer look and the scientific debate on the mystery of its creation began to unfold.

Their light heft, lechatelierite inclusions along with other extraterrestrial grains are what identifies them from other terrestrial iron-ore mineral materials.

OUR ETHICS

Yes, our crystals are ethically sourced & sold.

Read more:
Ethical mining/sourcing refers to the conditions in which a crystal is unearthed and the people and/or businesses that do it. Whilst a mineral may be sourced ethically from the earth, many stones are sent to factories in other countries for cutting and polishing into spheres and generators.

The label of ethics also applies to the selling and consumer purchasing.

Crystals must be correctly identified, certified as natural with any treatments disclosed. Too often crystals are lab grown or treated in a lab and sold as natural. This is incredibly important to us (and our in-house gemmologist) so each piece is tested and certified and accompanied by and authenticity card.

We pride ourselves on our crystal ethics, from earth to home.
