SCIENCE + INFO

Campo del Cielo (meaning "field of heaven") refers to a group of iron meteorites and the area in Argentina where they were found. The crater field covers 3km x 18.5km and contains at least 26 craters, the largest being 115 by 91 metres.

The find of this meteorite was reported to the general public in 1576, but were already well-known by indigenous peoples.

The craters and surrounding areas contain many fragments of an iron meteorite. In total, approximately 100 tonnes of fragments have been recovered, the most of any meteorite find, with two craters containing thousands of small iron pieces.

Fragments are typically small and oddly shaped, a sign of a massive, explosive collision that would have sent molten metal high into the atmosphere before raining back down. The size of the main body is estimated to have been larger than 4 metres (13 ft) in diameter.

Iron meteorites contain at least 90% iron, approx 7% nickel and a host of other elements including phosphorous, cobalt, sulphur and over 20 other trace elements.

Their high density and internal crystalline pattern names the Widmanstätten pattern are what identifies them from other terrestrial iron-ore mineral materials.

OUR ETHICS

Yes, our crystals are ethically sourced & sold.

Read more:
Ethical mining/sourcing refers to the conditions in which a crystal is unearthed and the people and/or businesses that do it. Whilst a mineral may be sourced ethically from the earth, many stones are sent to factories in other countries for cutting and polishing into spheres and generators.

The label of ethics also applies to the selling and consumer purchasing.

Crystals must be correctly identified, certified as natural with any treatments disclosed. Too often crystals are lab grown or treated in a lab and sold as natural. This is incredibly important to us (and our in-house gemmologist) so each piece is tested and certified and accompanied by and authenticity card.

We pride ourselves on our crystal ethics, from earth to home.
