SCIENCE

Tigers eye is a member of the quartz group and a pseudomorph of asbestos.

Colour: Brassy yellow, golden brown. Typically opaque or translucent in thin slices. The rich golden colour is caused by oxidation of the asbestos prior to silicification.

Common geological occurrences: India, Australia.

Crystallography: A pseudomorph refers to a substitution from one mineral to another whilst retaining the original appearance and dimensions. In the case of crocidolite, a form of asbestos, quartz has replaced the fibrous mineral retaining its dense fibrous structure. When cut parallel to the fibres, tigers eye can show a sheen known as chatoyancy or cat’s eye that is a result of light reflecting off the silky inclusions.

Crystal system: Fibrous masses
MOHs Hardness: 7

Picture Jasper is a variety of microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony) formed over millions of years through sedimentary layering and mineral-rich silica deposits. It is typically created when fine particulate matter such as clay, volcanic ash, or silt becomes embedded in silica-rich groundwater that slowly crystallizes into jasper. The resulting bands, swirls, and "landscape" patterns are natural mineral inclusions—often iron oxides or other impurities—compressed over geological time. These intricate markings give Picture Jasper its signature scenic appearance, resembling desert vistas, mountains, or tree-lined horizons. Most Picture Jasper is found in regions with high volcanic activity, such as the American Southwest or parts of Western Australia.

Crystal System: Trigonal (as a form of quartz)

CRYSTAL CARE

Although crystals have survived hundreds of thousands to millions of years (wow) in our earth they are still delicate and must be treated with TLC.

SOURCING ETHICS & VALUES

At Uluna, we are deeply committed to offering crystals that are not only beautiful but also ethically sourced and of the highest quality. Ethical sourcing means ensuring that the crystals we provide are mined under fair conditions, respecting both the environment and the workers involved. We also recognise that many crystals undergo processes like cutting and polishing in  factories far away from their mined locations, so we remain diligent about maintaining our integrity throughout the supply chain sourcing locally and directly where possible.

Our dedication to quality is upheld by our in-house gemmologist, who brings over 15 years of expertise to every piece we offer. Each crystal is carefully tested, correctly identified, and certified as natural, with any treatments fully disclosed. Unlike lab-grown or misrepresented stones often sold as natural, our crystals are authentic and come with an authenticity card, guaranteeing their provenance and purity so you can feel safe with each purchase. For us, ethics and quality are non-negotiable values.
