SCIENCE
Ruby is corundum (Al₂O₃) coloured by chromium; star ruby exhibits asterism—a six-rayed star produced by oriented rutile “silk” intersecting at ~60°. Key data: RI 1.762–1.770, SG ~4.00, trigonal. The effect is visible under a single point light and requires a cabochon with the c-axis perpendicular to the base; 12-rayed stars occur when two needle sets are present. Heat treatment can dissolve or reduce rutile (weakening the star) while enhancing body colour; diffusion treatments and synthetic star rubies (Verneuil + added rutile) exist, so disclosure matters. Fine natural stones come from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Tanzania; sharpness of the star depends on needle density, orientation, and cabochon symmetry.

Crystals must be correctly identified, certified as natural with any treatments disclosed. Too often crystals are lab grown or treated in a lab and sold as natural. This is incredibly important to us (and our in-house gemmologist) so each piece is tested and certified and accompanied by and authenticity card.
