Quartz and tourmaline have long been used for their energetic abilities in products from hair dryers to clocks and even the basic BBQ lighter - crystals are incredible energetic tools. Sphalerite is zinc sulfide (ZnS), the principal ore of zinc, and crystallises in the isometric system. It is known for its resinous to adamantine lustre and can range from transparent honey and amber tones through to deep red-brown or nearly black depending largely on iron content. It is relatively soft at Mohs 3.5–4, so crystals can be vulnerable to scratching and damage. Quartz, by contrast, is silicon dioxide (SiO₂), crystallising in the trigonal system with a Mohs hardness of 7. In specimens where sphalerite is associated with quartz, the quartz often provides a bright contrasting matrix or crystal setting that highlights the sphalerite’s lustre and form. Bulgaria is well regarded among mineral collectors for fine ore-mineral specimens, especially from classic lead-zinc mining regions that produce combinations of sphalerite, quartz, galena, pyrite, and related minerals.
