Sri Lanka has long been one of the world’s most important sources of fine moonstone, including rare phenomenal material that displays chatoyancy, or the “cat’s eye” effect. Moonstone belongs to the feldspar group and is most commonly associated with orthoclase and albite intergrowths. In moonstone, the soft floating glow known as adularescence is caused by light interacting with its internal layered structure, while cat’s eye moonstone shows an additional optical phenomenon: a sharp band of reflected light that appears to glide across the surface as the stone moves. This effect is known as chatoyancy and occurs when the stone contains aligned internal features that reflect or scatter light in a single concentrated band. To best display this effect, the gem is typically cut as a cabochon. Sri Lanka is especially noted for moonstone and other phenomenal gems, and cat’s eye moonstone is prized for combining moonstone’s soft glow with this striking, focused line of light

Ethical mining/sourcing refers to the conditions in which a crystal is unearthed and the people and/or businesses that do it. Whilst a mineral may be sourced ethically from the earth, many stones are sent to factories in other countries for cutting and polishing into spheres and generators. 

The label of ethics also applies to the selling and consumer purchasing. 

Crystals must be correctly identified, certified as natural with any treatments disclosed. Too often crystals are lab grown or treated in a lab and sold as natural. This is incredibly important to us (and our in-house gemmologist) so each piece is tested and certified and accompanied by and authenticity card.
