Selenite is the transparent to translucent crystalline variety of gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulfate with the formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. Gypsum crystallises in the monoclinic system and is a very soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 2, which is why selenite can bruise, scratch, or cleave quite easily. The term fishtail refers to a distinctive twinned crystal habit in gypsum, where two crystals grow together in a V-shaped form that resembles the tail of a fish. Mexico is well known for exceptional selenite, including famous material from Chihuahua, and these luminous crystals are prized for their transparency, sculptural form, and delicate lustre.
