This specimen unites three minerals that formed under the intense geological conditions of the Broken Hill orebody, one of the most significant and ancient polymetallic deposits in the world. Hedenbergite, a calcium-iron pyroxene, formed deep in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks under high temperature and pressure. Its deep green to black tones reflect its iron-rich composition, and it commonly occurs alongside sulphide minerals in skarn and high-grade metamorphic environments—conditions present during the complex geological evolution of the Broken Hill region.

Sphalerite (zinc sulphide) and Galena (lead sulphide) are two of the primary metallic ores that made Broken Hill globally famous. Sphalerite forms tight, resinous crystals in shades of dark amber to nearly black, carrying brilliant internal reflections due to its high refractive index. Galena, by contrast, crystallises in clean metallic cubes and octahedra, its perfect cleavage and density making it instantly recognisable. Together with hedenbergite, these minerals represent a rare association shaped by extreme heat, pressure, mineral-rich fluids, and tectonic forces across more than a billion years of Earth history. This trio captures the essence of the deep crust—structured, metallic, ancient, and enduring.
