Chalcedony balls are spherical formations of microcrystalline quartz, composed of inter-grown silica fibres that create their smooth, rounded shape. These formations typically develop in volcanic or sedimentary environments, where silica-rich fluids fill cavities or voids in the rock and gradually crystallise over time. Unlike larger quartz crystals, Chalcedony forms through a process of colloidal deposition, where tiny silica particles suspended in water slowly bond together in layers, creating its characteristic fine-grained structure. The spherical growth of Chalcedony balls is influenced by uniform mineral deposition and surface tension effects in mineral-rich solutions. Their subtle translucency and waxy lustre result from the tightly packed quartz micro crystals, which scatter light in a diffused manner. These formations often display colour variations due to trace elements such as iron, copper, or manganese, which can give them hues ranging from blue and grey to pink or green.

Ethical mining/sourcing refers to the conditions in which a crystal is unearthed and the people and/or businesses that do it. Whilst a mineral may be sourced ethically from the earth, many stones are sent to factories in other countries for cutting and polishing into spheres and generators. 

The label of ethics also applies to the selling and consumer purchasing. 

Crystals must be correctly identified, certified as natural with any treatments disclosed. Too often crystals are lab grown or treated in a lab and sold as natural. This is incredibly important to us (and our in-house gemmologist) so each piece is tested and certified and accompanied by and authenticity card.
