Calcite (CaCO₃), trigonal, RI ~1.49, SG ~2.71, with perfect rhombohedral cleavage and strong double refraction (Iceland spar is the classic optical grade). “Stellar beam” refers to sharply scalenohedral crystals (acute “dog-tooth” forms) that radiate or taper into beam-like points. Many specimens fluoresce (orange-red to pink) due to trace Mn²⁺, and may show phantoms or overgrowths. These crystals typically form in hydrothermal veins and open cavities within carbonate rocks; notable Mexican localities include Charcas (San Luis Potosí) and districts in Chihuahua/Santa Eulalia/Naica, which yield superb, sharply terminated clusters. Handle with care—calcite’s low hardness and cleavage make it prone to scratching and parting, and it effervesces in dilute HCl.
